(TAMPA, Fla.) The week following the 2013 NFL Draft concluded on a high note with 100 East-West Shrine Game® alumni heading to NFL training camps, and this number is expected to increase in the weeks to come. The college all-star game, which benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®, has once again proven its success as a launching pad for top college athletes seeking professional football careers. At the conclusion of the 2012 professional football season, more than 300 East-West Shrine Game alumni were on NFL rosters.
“The East-West Shrine Game extends its congratulations to all of our players heading to NFL training camps,” said Executive Director Harold Richardson. “We are pleased to have the opportunity to provide our athletes with exposure to professional coaches, a platform to refine their skills and, most importantly, a glimpse into what life will be like in the NFL.”
Last year, more than 90 East-West Shrine Game alumni were drafted or signed on as free agents to NFL teams. So far, at least 100 players have signed with NFL teams this year and Richardson is confident in the game’s bright future. “The East-West Shrine Game has been a staple in college football since 1925,” said Richardson. “Our goal is to continually invite quality athletes, foster our existing relationships with NFL clubs and provide more players with the prospect of making professional teams.”
Capitalizing on the momentum from the 2013 alumni success, preparations have kicked-off for the upcoming East-West Shrine Game which will be held on January 18, 2014, at 4 p.m. ET at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.
